June 24th, 1983 grand opening ad as 8-plex in photo section.
Grand opening ad in photo section.
Mr. Cook was a wonderful individual to work for. He knew everybody who was anybody in Greenville, SC. Knowing him opened a lot of doors for a lot of people. He could draw theatre ads like know one else I ever have ever seen before. His ads were not the carnival barker type “hook'em and rook'em” stuff. They were class all the way. I believe his family values stood in the way of him being in a booking and advertising office. Plus, He loved the front lines of the theatre business.
I learned from him to be on the floor and accessible to employees and customers at showtime. I was so sorry to hear that he had passed away.
It’s 6:00 PM right now Mr. C, “go get'em.”
A great theatre man that they don’t make anymore!

The Bijou Cinemas opened on the 3rd of June 1976 with “The Ode To Billy Joe” and “Whale of A Tale”. It was only 4 screens at the time, the next summer we opened screens 5 & 6, 7 & 8 were added around 1984. I was projectionist there from opening until 1981, I returned in 1991 as the GM to replace my Father in law, Paul Cook, who semi retired. It was closed and demolished June 3, 2001, exactly 25 years to the day that it opened. Mr.Cook was there for all of the 25 years.
