Raleigh Mall Cinemas 1 & 2 were opened on December 25, 1975 inside the Raleigh Mall in Beckley, WV. The theatres generally showed first-run movies from the late-1970’s to the late-1980’s, but none were ‘big event’ films. I remember while the Crossroads Mall Cinema 3 (later 6) had “Return of the Jedi”, “Jaws 3D”, “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, the Raleigh Mall Cinemas 1 & 2 showed films like “52 Pick Up”, “Dead End Drive-In”, and “Clue”. The big blockbuster movies usually arrived at the Raleigh Mall after they had played at Crossroads Mall.
Raleigh Mall Cinemas 1 & 2 closed for a short time in the very late-1980’s and reopened in the early-1990’s as a dollar theatre, drawing generally large crowds from the early-1990’s to finally closing for good around 1997. The theatres were demolished when most of the mall was demolished, the Elder-Beerman is still there, along with Gabriel Brothers, but the theatre and most of the mall is gone. Even as a dollar house that were still nice theatres, dated for sure, but clean and cozy.

I was walking in the area where the Cinema 1 & 2 used to be just this past weekend and thought of the movies I saw there in the 80’s, Transformers-The Movie, Fresh Horses, Child’s Play, For Keeps & many, many more when it was a $1 discount house in the 90’s, Lethal Weapon 3, Sister Act, Twister, Volcano, Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scream & The Crow. Great memories, wish this one was still around.
Opened as Cinema 1 & 2 on December 25th, 1975. Grand opening ad posted.
