This opened on December 21st, 1979. Grand opening ad posted.
Saw “Ordinary People” there but I seem to remember it was only shown at this theater after it won the Oscar for Best Picture, about seven months after it’s original release. The last movie I saw there was “My Best Friends Wedding”.
The last movie I saw there was Happy Gilmore back in 1996.
I don’t think I have any photos of it. I also went here a lot as a kid, and a young adult. It was so convenient in those days. I remember the last days of its existence. The seats were covered in trash bags & the ceiling shingles were falling down, one-by-one. I was born & raised in Algiers. We had everything: great elementary schools, theater, hospital. In the late 90’s we started to lose all this. First they tore down AGA school, then Aurora theater, then they reduced the function of Jo Ellen. I mean, what happened? Everybody had to hoard toward the Palace Theater in Harvey (?) and it was way too crowded. I don’t go to the movies anymore. I’d also like to see pictures!
Does anyone out there have pictures of the Aurora? If so, please share. I went there a lot as a kid and have been looking for pictures for a while, but can’t find any.
