Lyceum Cinema

The Lyceum Cinema was situated at the junction of Antrim Road with New Lodge Road and Hallidays Road. It was opened on 11 December 1916 with “Maritana”, starring Alice Hollister. Operated by Michael Curran, an electrical contractor who presented De Forest Talking Pictures as early as 1926.

The Lyceum Cinema closed on 29th April 1966, after which the Rank Organisation used it as a film storage depot, but it was destroyed by an IRA bomb in 1970, destroying thousands of reels of film. Housing now occupies the site.

This cinema would have passed into Rank Theatres (Northern Ireland) Ltd.’s ownership in 1955, when Curran Theatres Ltd. sold many of their Belfast cinemas to them.
