The Crumlin Picture House opened on 23 March 1914 with the short film “Secret Service Sam” starring William E. Shay, as part of the programme. It quickly became widely known as ‘The Ranch’, not, apparently, just because of the many Westerns shown, but, according to some, also because of the waiting room, which had steel bars which formed corrals into which the patrons gathered! (The manager also seems to have got in on the act, as he reportedly wore a large Stetson and regulars called him the Sheriff!)
It was late moving over to sound (1932) and CinemaScope was installed in 1955. In 1972 the Crumlin Picture House closed after being bombed by the IRA. The building stood derelict for many years, but is thought to have been finally demolished in the very late-1990’s.
