Cinema

In Castlederg, County Tyrone, the town’s cinema was opened in 1934 with “King of Kings”. It is listed as the Picture House in the 1940 Kine Year Book, operated by Mr J. Stewart. Listed as the Cinema in 1944 by Castlederg Cinemas Ltd. It had a proscenium width of 29ft and used RCA sound. The Cinema was closed in 1991 with “The last Picture Show”.

In September 2008, when my photographs were taken, it still survived, standing derelict and utterly forlorn. It was demolished in April 2014.

The frontage has since been removed so the cinema looks more like a neglected barn today (2014)

Following the above link also tells us that it opened in 1934 with King of Kings, was built by Lesley Stewart, sold in 1950s to William Barry, and closed in 1991 with The Last Picture Show.
