The Picture House in Banbridge, County Down, was opened in 1924 with “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. I is listed in the 1931 Kine Year Book as being operated by J. U. Finney. In the 1940 and 1954 editions the operator is Picture House (Banbridge) Ltd, with films booked at Irish Theatre Ltd. in Belfast. The proscenium width was 25ft, there was a 20ft stage and four dressing rooms. It was closed in 1956 leaving the only cinema listed in town was the 950-seat Iveagh Cinema on Huntly Road.
The Picture House was demolished 1974 for a road improvement scheme. The photograph, with the (closed?) cinema in the background, was kindly provided by the local library, but the date it was taken is not known.

The Picture House opened in 1924 and was run by J. Finney. The opening film was The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Lon Chaney. It closed in 1956 and was demolished in 1974 for a new road link. This was Finney’s replacement for an earlier cinema on Kenlis Street which he converted from a roller-skating rink. Finney, who was a director of Irish Theatres died in the late 1930s.
Picture House (Banbridge) Ltd. also operated the Iveagh Cinema in the town.
