Hippodrome Cinema

In Maldon, Essex, the Hippodrome Picture Palace opened in 1910, part of David Agar’s circuit. It had a 6ft deep stage and three dressing rooms. The proscenium was 19ft wide. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. By 1926 it had been taken over by Shipman & King circuit, and in 1934 they gave the cinema a major refurbishment. Known then as simply the Hippodrome Cinema, it had closed by 1943, and was eventually converted into retail premises. Today there is no trace of the former cinema from the front, but the huge stage tower behind gives some indication of the building’s previous life.
