Rex Cinema

Opened in 1939 with stage facilities and a café. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. Part of the George Green circuit of Glasgow. The Rex Cinema had a circle and 1,222 seats so was much larger than the nearby Picture House. Some golden divans were provided in the circle.

On the night of 28th January 1944 the auditorium was destroyed by a fire which brought the roof down. It was later partially rebuilt and the cinema had re-opened by 1946. Last redecorated (by the staff) in 1956 the cinema looked a bit shabby by the 1970’s, but was fulltime on films although its rival then offered part week bingo.

Closed with “Jabberwocky” on 17th December, 1977 and demolished in the late-1970’s. Prices were as low as 15p in 1976, but survival was explained by the poor TV reception in the area.
