The Gloucester Five Cinemas were opened by Famous Players on November 9, 1988 at the newly built Gloucester Centre in East Ottawa. Unlike most cinemas, the theaters were named rather than numbered. The names were: the Paradise, the Palace, the Rio, the Avalon and the Olympia.
The cinema had a very successful run before closing in March 2001, due to close proximity to the nearby Silvercity, which opened in 1999. It was demolished in early-2003 to make way for an expanded Loblaws Superstore.
