Stanley Cinema

The Stanley Hall was built in 1901 as part of a complex of buildings used for various events. It was designed by architect John Graham. The Stanley Hall was first used as a skating rink and dance hall. It was converted into a cinema in 1910, but closed in 1911.

New operators took over and it was re-opened in November 1911. Around 1930 a RCA sound system was fitted and it was renamed Stanley Cinema. In the late-1940’s it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. The Stanley Cinema was closed on 3rd January 1959.

It was converted into 12 flats and more recently into 26 modern student rooms. The ground floor shops were also renovated with renewed frontages.

The auditorium is almost entirely separate from the street terrace. A 2021 photo can be seen here:-
