The Rialto Theatre replaced the Rex Theatre (which has its own page on Cinema Treasures) which had been destroyed by fire in 1939. The Rialto Theatre was opened on August 6, 1940 with Cary Grant in “His Girl Friday”. This was the larger of the two theatres in La Belle. The Rialto Theatre seated 285 and closed on February 21, 1955 with Brett King in “Jesse James vs. the Daltons”.
It went over to retail use, followed by use as a public library. The building is still standing.

The Rialto opened August 6, 1940 as the replacement to the burned down Rex Theatre. First film, “His Girl Friday.” The Theatre closed permanently on February 21, 1955 with Jesse James vs. the Daltons. A minor fire after that screening led to a seat sale and the building was repaired and used for other retail purposes. In 1970, the building housed the local public library.
