The small town of Lewistown, Missouri created an opera house that appears to have opened with live entertainment on January 3, 1895 on its Main Street. The town’s population doubled from 200 to just over 400 between 1890 and 1910. In 1911, the Gem Theatre began operation challenging the aging Lewistown Opera House’s business model.
W.H. Bronestine traded the opera house and one other building to Ed Falugher for his farm. It appears that the Princess Theatre was then housed for a period in the Lewistown Opera House competing with the Gem Theatre by showing movies. The Princess Theatre of La Belle just six miles away and the Princess Theatre of Lewistown appear to have had common ownership for a brief period.
The Princess Theatre of Lewistown appears to have left the opera house in 1919. The venue reverted to its Lewistown Opera House moniker and appears to have ceased operations in 1921.
