Biografen Rio

The Biografen Rio is a district cinema situated by the sea in Stockholm’s upmarket street of Hornstulls Strand on Sodermalm. The cinema itself is marvellous given that its look and equipment seems to have changed little from the time it was opened on 15th November 1943 with 401 seats. First of all, the cinema’s emblem at the outsign wall is nicely lit in red, which arouses the curiosity of passers-by. The foyer of the cinema is equipped with a classical concession stand and some seats. Staff are very friendly and seem to know most of the clients. The screening room is in the basement of the building. At the rear of the room there is a raised section on which tables and stools are placed where you can obviosuly eat/drink while watching the film (it seems that this service is only offered in certain situations), the rest of the seats (around 200) are rather old-fashioned red cotton-style. The ceiling is designed in kind of waves, which is typical for old cinema theatres.

In December 1973 it was re-named Kvartersbion and the seating capacity was reduced to 325. In recent years it has reverted back to its original Biografen Rio name. In addition to the main screening room, there seems to exist a cinema bar including a screen called “Salong 4”. I have not figured out, however, where this is situated. The cinema itself shows rather demanding arthouse films and is frequented by a rather intellectual and cultivated genre of people. While being under the threat of closing for some time, it seems that the cinema has still nice days ahead.
