The Majestic Cinema was opened on 29th August 1938 with Jeanette MacDonald in “Maytime”. It was built for and operated by Palladium (Durham) Ltd. Seating was provided on a stadium plan, with a raised stepped section at the rear instead of an overhanging balcony. It was equipped with an AWL sound system.
The Majestic Cinema was badly damaged by a fire on 26th August 1956. Repairs were carried out and it re-opened on 6th December 1956 with Kenneth Moore in “Reach for the Sky”.
The Majestic Cinema was closed on 4th December 1961 with Elvis Presley in “Flaming Star”. It was converted into a full time bingo club (bingo had been played for several months before closing on certain night of the week). In 2014 it operates as a Top Ten Bingo Club.
