Located in Chester-le-Street, County Durham. The Chester Cinema was opened on 14th March 1921. It had a 22 feet wide proscenium. In the mid-1920’s it was re-named Savoy Cinema. In September 1934 it was taken over by Smelt’s Theatres and had been equipped with a British Acoustic(BA) sound system.
In December 1946 it was taken over by the Newcastle based Essoldo chain. The Savoy Cinema was closed in 1960.

Photo added:The Front of House of the Savoy is prominent in this 1930 image of what I assume to be ‘Shrove Tuesday Football’, an annual event which ceased two years later in 1932. The films showing are ‘The Unholy Three’ (Lon Chaney) and ‘The Richest Man in the World’(Louis Mann, Robert Montgomery).
