In the County Durham town of Chester-Le-Street, the President 3 & 4 two screen cinema opened on 12th October 1980. It was owned by Rentamemory Ltd. (Mr J. Sample), and followed the President 1 & 2 twin cinema that had opened in 1977 in nearby Houghton-le-Spring.
Unfortunately, as the cinema was not making sufficient profit, it was closed in November 1984. The following year, rumours began that it was to be converted into a snooker hall. However, in April 1985, screen 3 was re-opened. Admission was just 75p for children and £1.50 for adults. But even this was not a success, and the cinema closed in the summer of 1986. Screen 4 became a snooker club. By the time I visited, in October 2005, the building was home to G. M. D. car sales.
