The Temperance Hall, which had been built in 1905, and first screened films on October 12, 1907. A cinema in the upstairs hall opened on 22nd December 1911. It seemed only to show films in the winter but later became a full-time cinema known as the Temperance Hall Pictures.
It was renamed Gem Cinema on 28th August 1960 and closed on 12th June 1962 with Richard Egan in “The 300 Spartans”. It had a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system and a proscenium with of 24ft.
It was later the Gem Bingo Club. The premises today house a dance studio.
