Located in New Wortley, a suburb 1 mile south west of the City centre. The Plaza Cinema opened on 17th April 1930, just round the corner from The Crown Cinema. The first film was “Spite Marriage” with Buster Keaton. It advertised, “For a short time silent films will be shown, together with variety turns but it is intended eventually to install the necessary apparatus for talking pictures”. Indeed, the remains of the building seem to have a fly tower. It closed on Monday 28th June 1937 with “Spy of Napoleon”. The premises were gutted by fire which broke out at 4am on Tuesday 29th June 1937. The shell of the building remained intact and was then used as a clothing factory. Today it is home to several small businesses, including a carpet shop.
