The Salina Journal reported on the invitation-only opening of Mid-State Cinemas on August 8, 1973. Operated by Dickinson Theatres, the 512-seat, twin theater premiered “Jeremiah Johnson", staring Robert Redford.
The theater opened the next day with an ‘Aparama,’ showing four of the “Planet of the Apes” movies, which led up to the latest, “Battle for the Planet of the Apes".
At the time Dickinson Theatres operated 38 theaters in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. Their local theaters were the Vogue Theatre and the 81 Drive-In.
In January 2005 the Journal announced that Dickinson Theatres, at Mid-State Plaza was closing and the mall was going to use the space for other purposes. After the closing Dickinson still had eight other screens screens at Central Mall.
