Outdoor movies were first shown at Leederville oval. Rialto Gardens opened in 1926 in Newcastle Street, and closed in the early-1930’s. The New Oxford Garden Beautiful opened in 1935 at 669 Newcastle Street. The gardens were closed in 1959, and sold and site turned into a petrol station(Ampol).
Luna Gardens in the Park opened(on the old Leederville primary school site) in 1995. The gardens(then named Luna Open Air Gardens) moved to Leeederville oval in 1996. The gardens(then named Luna Gardens) next to the Luna Theatre behind the two new cinemas in the old disused shops sharing the same entrance as the new cinemas. Name changed to Luna Outdoor Cinema. The outdoor cinema is still operating part of the year.
