Located in Launceston, Cornwall. The Tower Cinema was built on the site of the fire house, and opened in August 1935 with Stanley Holloway in “D'ye ken John Peel”. It was named Tower as it had a tower rising over its entrance. It was equipped with a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system. The projection box was located under the circle at the rear of the stalls.
In the late-1950’s it was taken over by the A. Jackson Withers circuit, and they introduced part time bingo in the 1960’s. They purchased the building in 1976.
It was taken over by the Rank Organisation in 1976 and closed as a cinema on 14th February 1976 with Gene Hackman in “The French Connection 2” and “Monte Welsh”. It became a full time bingo club.
Leased by an independent operator in November 1977, it reverted back to films on Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons, with bingo at others times. Eventually going back to full time bingo. Films returned in April 1983 and continued part time until the summer on 1985, when full time bingo returned. The projectors were retained so that films could be screened for children’s matinees and special holiday shows. The Tower Cinema was totally closed in 1987 and was demolished in 1995/1996. A block of flats named Market Court has been built on the site.
