Cinema

In the north Norfolk town of Fakenham, a building dating from 1886, formerly a British School for boys, girls and infants, was converted, in 1916, to become the town’s first cinema.

It was owned by Mr H. E. Howell of the Fakenham Cinema Company, and run by manager George Baxter, who was said to be “crazy on cinemas”.

Already facing competition from the Regal Cinema, which had opened in 1920, the Cinema closed in 1931 when the Central Cinema opened in 1931. No doubt the cost of installing sound equipment was a further factor.

The building was turned into a bazaar, selling all types of goods. In recent years (certainly since my visit in March 2001) it has been occupied by the Godfrey DIY Store.
