In the Aberdeenshire town of Ballater, the first listing I can trace for “The Picture House” is the 1944 Kinematograph Year Book. The owner was listed as Robert Martin Cay, of Aberdeen, and the cinema had 400 seats. However, there is a listing of “New cinema” (with no other details at all) for the town in the 1940 edition, so presumably the Picture House was under construction at that time, and opened shortly thereafter.
The 1953 edition still lists Mr Cay as the owner, but by then the cinema had a reduced capacity of 312 seats.
The Picture House closed in the 1970’s. The building became a furniture store. When I visited, in June 2005, there was no exterior signage, so it is unclear what, if any, business was operating from it at that time. Since June 2019 it has been in use as an antique store.

Appears to have re-opened in June 2019 as an antiques store called Bruce of Ballater. Looks like the fairly plain interior has been subdivided horizontally to provide two floors of accommodation space for the shop. Exterior has been tidied up with a lick of paint.
The other cinema in the town was the Victoria Hall, a much older stone building of Victorian era build.
