In the small Devon town of Chagford, situated on the north east edge of the Dartmoor Forest, the Rex Cinema opened in the mid-1930’s. The building is thought to have been originally constructed as an Assembly Hall, with the hall/cinema upstairs on the first floor.
The Rex Cinema was not listed in the 1937 Kinematograph Year Book, but it was in the 1940 edition. By that time, it was owned by A. G. Curtis, had a proscenium 12ft wide and 200 seats.
By the 1953 edition, the seating capacity had reduced to 183.
The Rex Cinema was closed by 1963, and was converted into a furniture store
When I visited, in April 2008, the building was being used for storage.
