In the Northumberland town of Rothbury, the Jubilee Hall opened in 1850 as a reading room. In 1888 a lecture hall and recreation room were added. Lantern shows and silent films were presented as early as 1902, but it was not until the 1930’s that film shows were presented with any regularity, twice nightly, but no shows on Sundays.
The hall burned down in 1939, but was rebuilt in 1944 and the film shows continued.
The cinema closed in 1960 following a screening of “The Ten Commandments”, and the hall concentrated on its many non-film activities.
However, in 2006 Rothbury Community Cinema was set up, by a volunteer committee, using the latest digital technology, showing films in the main hall.
There are two film shows every month, usually on Friday evenings at 7.30pm. The aim is to show a wide variety of films to suit all tastes.
Entrance is free, but patrons are asked to make a donation, for the use of the Jubilee Hall and to help pay for the heating, equipment maintenance, etc. (The suggested donation is £3.)
When I visited, on 1st August 2008, during one of my cinema expeditions, I was given a very warm welcome, and very much enjoyed “There Will Be Blood” starring Daniel Day-Lewis.
