In Coupar Angus, Perth & Kinross, the Picture Playhouse opened in a converted church building.
It is thought that this was a successor to the Picture Playhouse cinema which had operated since around 1920 (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures) as the ‘new’ Picture Playhouse was under the same proprietors, Coupar & Prain. Slightly confusingly, the new Picture Playhouse was also listed as being on Hay Street, the location of the original Picture Playhouse, until the early-1940’s editions of Kinematograph Year Books, when it was listed as being on Queen Street (the buildings' location to this day). This is likely an administrative error by the compilers of the Kinematograph Year Book’s, although Hay Street does continue into Queen Street, so it is possible that the present day Queen Street was originally called Hay Street.
The proscenium was 25ft wide and a Mihaly sound system was in operation, later replaced by a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system.
The Picture Playhouse was also listed in the 1953 edition and had been re-named Playhouse Cinema in 1954.
The Playhouse Cinema was still open in 1966 and was later closed.
The building subsequently returned to religious use, as St. Mary’s Catholic church.
