Remodeled REX 1940

The Rex Theatre first starts advertising in 1914. Roland K. Hill purchased the theatre to add to his southern circuit. But in 1920, American Theatres purchased the theatre giving it exclusive rights to Universal Studio films.

The Rex Theatre closed briefly late in 1928 to be fitted for sound. In 1940, it was given a major remodeling and a new look that served it virtually to the end of its cinematic offerings. The long-running theatre was a mainstay in downtown Sumter. It was closed on January 3, 1958 with Randolph Scott in “The Tall T” & Lash La Rue in “The Black Lash”.
