Located in Inverness city centre, the Central Hall Picture House was opened in 1912 by Inverness Picture House Ltd. seating 1,100 patrons. It had a 28ft wide proscenium.
In 1931, following the destruction by fire of the Theatre Royal, the Central Hall was converted to theatre use. It was re-named the Empire Theatre on 17th September 1934 when Harry Lauder was the star attraction.
By 1953, according to the Kinematograph Year Book, the cinema was grouped in the Caledonian Associated Cinemas Ltd. circuit, and seating had reduced slightly to 1,015.
By the mid-1960’s the Empire Theatre could be dark for weeks on end, with only occasional wrestling bouts on Tuesdays or Thursdays.
The theatre closed in 1970 and was demolished. In June 2016 a Pentahotel stood on the site.
