Cosmopolitan Theatre

Located in the north Melbourne district of Brunswick. The Cosmopolitan Theatre (under the banner of Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures) began operating as a theatre for the Greek community on 11th November 1961 with the production “GOLFO” which starred Valakou Antigoni & Glinos Giorgos. This attracted a huge crowd with many turned away. The hall was owned by Christ Church, and a projection booth had to be built before the building could be converted into a cinema. The initial seating capacity was 376, which had been purchased second-hand from Hoyts New Theatre, Malvern.

The theatre continued profitably until Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures purchased the much larger Empire Theatre on Sydney Road, Brunswick, with a grand opening taking place there on 4th February 1966.

The final screening for the Cosmopolitan Theatre was on 29th January 1966 which featured the Italian epic “Carthage in Flames”(Italian:Cartagine in Fiamme) a 1960 Italian historical drama film directed by Carmine Gallone, and starring Pierre Brasseur & Jose Suarez.

The hall today in known as the Bardin Centre, which is the home of Christ Church Op Shop, the parrish office and the main hall now used for functions.
