Headline from press report of the Carlton Newsreel's 1939 opening

Located in the Hotel Carlton on Queen Street between George Street and Albert Street. The Carlton Newsreel Theatrette was opened on 14th September 1939. It was noted for featuring rear projection onto a ground-glass screen. Still operating as a newsreel theatre in 1960, by 1968 it had been re-named Carlton Theatre, and was playing feature films.
