The Montross Theatre was built by George Clanton who operated the Daw Theatre in Tappahannock, VA. It had a ‘soft’ opening on October 3, 1947 and its official opening was October 10, 1947. Seating was provided for 400 in the orchestra and for 150 African-American patrons in the balcony. There was a small stage for live presentations.
