Air-Park Drive-In

The Highland Drive-In was opened in 1947. In 1950 it was renamed Highland Air-Park Drive-In. In June 1955 it was taken over by Robert L. Costilow and renamed Air-Park Drive-In. It was located across from the airport. Now part of the country club next to it.

A closer address is 3321 Fairway Dr, Highland, IL. A 1991 aerial photo shows part of the ramps remaining at that location with most of the property covered by a pond.

Today, there is no trace of the drive-in remaining.

When J.W. Thompson closed the Strand Theatre in nearby Pochahontas for a remodel, he launched his Air-Park Auto Theatre in 1947 near the Highland Airport. The concept was that you could fly in or drive-in. When the venue had its seasonal opening in 1950, it changed its name to the Highland Airpark Drive-In Theatre. In 1954, the theatre was simply called the Air-Park Drive-In Theatre. It closed after the 1955 season and does not appear to have reopened.

Motion Picture Exhibitor, June 15, 1955: “In Highland, Ill., the Air Park Drive-In, 300 cars, will be taken over by R. L. Costilow, a teacher in the Highland High School. Prior to his teaching job here, Costilow had experience in theatre operations in the middle west. Adolph P. List had operated the drive-in since July 30, 1953.”
