The Avon Drive-In opened on April 30, 1953 with Audie Murphy in “The Duel at Silver Creek” & Claudette Colbert in “Outpost in Malaya”. In 1955, it received a new CinemaScope screen. During its last years in operation, the Avon Drive-In began to alternate seasons with the indoor Avon Theatre in downtown Breese (which today functions as a live performance venue.)
On October 6, 1996, the drive-in was closed with Woody Harrelson in “Kingpin”. It was demolished except for its marquee the next year. The property was acquired by a local newspaper, which built large metal structures on the site. The marquee is now used to advertise the newspaper.

Approx. location of this drive-in was north of this address at N 4th St & Drive in Rd on the SE corner. Cleary Building is where the theatre sat.
Does the arrow still work / chase? Does the newspaper light it up? Always sad to see a Drive-In pass, but at least the marquee was saved, at least in part (I’m guessing the theatre name was atop). Would love to see a pic of it before.
A more accurate address for this theater is 8086 Old Hwy 50, Breese IL 62230. This points directly to the entrance road. What is now Drive In Rd. was next to the drive in itself.
Please update.
