Located in Drogheda, County Louth. The Abbey Cinema when it opened on 8th September 1937 was said to be the most luxurious provincial cinema in Ireland. It had a sloping auditorium with tip-up seating and carpeted aisles, with a balcony overhead, and was built by John Murphy a garage proprietor. The first film to be screened in the 1,000-seater was “Wings of the Morning” starring Irish tenor John McCormack and Steve Donohue. The building burned down on 26th February 1969 when “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” was on the bill. A replacement twin-screen Abbey Cinema was opened in the Abbey Shopping Centre in 1973 (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
