Boeing IMAX is no longer a Pacific Science Center IMAX Theatre.
Built on the site of the original Eames Theatre that was heavily remodeled, the Pacific Science Center IMAX Theatre is the 11th IMAX ever built and the second theater to open in Seattle by the Canadian-owned IMAX system, with the first one being the 232-seat Omnirama at the Pier 59. When it originally opened with “To Fly” in July 1979, the IMAX at the Pacific Science Center originally housed 382 seats and a 40x60ft screen.
The second Boeing IMAX theater auditorium was announced on July 24, 1996 by French architect Denis Laming, who showed a model during a news conference that same day at the PSC, costing $18.5 million. This was announced at the same time a gallery named after Ginger and Barry Ackerley, owners of Ackerly Communications and the Seattle SuperSonics, were announced as an adjacent. Construction took two years before opening with “Everest” on October 22, 1998. The Boeing features a 60x80ft screen, 370 seats, and a 12,000-watt surround sound system. In total, both the PACCAR IMAX and the Boeing IMAX auditoriums housed a grand total of 660 seats.
