After years of slow decline, it is truly over for the Kinepolis Utrecht City cinema as of Monday, May 11. The iconic building, which had housed a cinema since 1936, has been sold and is permanently closed as of today.
“Kinepolis has sold the building and operations of the cinema cease as of today, Given the significantly changed cinema landscape in Utrecht in recent years (including the opening of Kinepolis Jaarbeurs at the end of 2016) and the investments required by the building, Kinepolis has decided to close its doors.”
Things had been going badly for the cinema for quite some time. The building was visibly in disrepair. As early as 2015, City seemed destined to disappear, but a petition kept the cinema open at the time.
It has since become clear that the City cinema on Voorstraat will be acquired by real estate entrepreneur Robert-Paul Caron. Although the takeover has not yet been fully finalized according to Caron, one thing is already certain, according to him: films will no longer be shown there. “Kinepolis sold on the condition that it never becomes a cinema again.”
