The Blue Moon Cinema opened in 1938 and was owned by the McCourt family, proprietors of the Blue Moon Café. When founder Noel went to America in the mid-1940’s it was run by his sister Mary, but changed hands to William Molloy, owner of the Castle Cinema in Castlerea, at the turn of the 1960’s. An unlikely survivor it outlived the Royal Cinema and closed in 1997.
It was briefly occupied by a hairdresser and then Joyce’s discount store, but is now a fabric and soft furnishings shop. The mosaic at the entrance to the shop is still very much visible under one’s feet.
