Located in Ballyshannon, County Donegal. Opened as the Abbey Cinema on17th November 1946 with Gary Cooper in “Saratoga Trunk”. It was run by a group of businessmen, including John Sweeney of the Commercial Hotel, known as the Ballyshannon Cinema Company. The cinema seated 500 people and had a café and ballroom attached. It was closed as a cinema in the 1960’s, but re-opened on 30th November 1969 by T. O’Connell.
Today the building has been refaced and operates as the Abbey Centre featuring a mix of plays, music and dance. The local film club screens films here generally twice a month.

The Abbey opened on 17 November 1946 designed as a theatre and cinema. Previews were held for specially invited guests the day before when “Saratoga Trunk” was shown. It must have closed for films at some point in the 1960s as it was opened again on 30 November 1969 by a Mr O'Connell, probably as a result of the Erne having been damaged by fire.
