Located in Loughrea, County Galway. The Town Hall was built in 1862 for the Marquess of Clanricarde and donated to the townspeople in 1928. It was converted to a cinema in the 1930’s and was fitted with 375 seats and an RCA sound system. Whereas many town halls only screened films for a limited time, this one appears to have become a regular cinema screening films up until the 1980’s.
In 2017 the local authority refused to provide funding for a scheme to reopen the Town Hall, but this hasn’t daunted the community group who are cracking on with the project in order to prevent the building from being sold off.
