A rarity in the 21st century, this newly-opened (August, 2003) drive-in theater, built by Carl McSparin, is one of less than a dozen still still in operation in Illinois. McSparin wants to reintroduce a new generation who are largely unfamiliar with outdoor theaters to the ozoner.
The drive-in can accomodate about 400 cars, and screens first-run features. Built in the middle of a former hayfield, outside of Salem, Mac’s Drive-In is the first newly built drive-in to open in Illinois in over 25 years.
By 2009. it had been renamed Salem Drive-In. It had closed by spring 2011.

This theater is apparently known as the Salem Drive-In now. The website address is www.salemdrivein.com
I photographed this drive-in last weekend. Sadly it appears to no longer be operational. The word I got from the locals was that the salvage yard next door purchased the land and is using it as additional space for cars and car parts.
I would love to find the former owner of this drive-in and include them in my documentary about the Hi Lite 30 drive-in in Aurora.
