The Sundown Drive-In opened on June 14, 1949 with Maureen O'Hara in “The Homestretch”, according a note in the July 9, 1949 issue of BoxOffice. The $40,000, 300-car theatre was owned by Carl E. Anderson. It had RCA in-car speakers, and its screen was 40x50 feet.
The Sundown Drive-In was included in the Motion Picture Almanac through its final drive-in list in 1988. In a 1990 aerial photo, it was completely gone. Nothing remains of the drive-in today.
