Stratford in East London has seen a huge injection of cash to regenerate this formerly rundown area of East London. One of the first buildings to be built in 1997 was the award winning Picturehouse. The building is a very striking modern Art Deco style complex with four stadium seated screens with THX sound and a huge lobby area with a huge bar and cafe.
The Picturehouse played a mix of first run quality mainstream and arthouse films with regular documentary and foreign language slots.
Of course, the area of Stratford was highlighted due to the summer 2012 Olympic Games.
In early-2020 the cinema was redesigned to the plans of architectural firm Earle Architects.
The Stratford East Picturehouse was closed on 31st July 2024 due to parent company of Picturehouse Cinemas, Cineworld, restructuring. It was announced in early-September 2024 that it would “reopen soon as the Metro Cinema”.

The Architectural Firm; Burrell Foley Fischer (John Burrell, Mark Foley & Stefanie Fischer) designed the Stratford East Picture House. It opened in August 1997.
Two exterior photographs I took in April 2006:

Picturehouse have confirmed that this cinema will close on 28th July 2024, the third closure announced for this summer along with Bromley and Fulham Road. When I was there a few months ago to see The Zone of Interest it did seem a bit of a sad sight, looking very worn and areas closed off.
