Loew's Boston Road Theatre

Located at the corner of Boston Road and Stebbins Avenue in the Bronx. The Boston Road Theatre was opened in 1925. It was equipped with a Robert-Morton 2 manual 4 ranks organ. By 1936 it became part of Loew’s Theatres Inc. chain. It was still open in 1951, but had closed by 1952. By 2007 it had become a Fine Fare Supermarket, which continues in use in 2018.

There were 2 Loews Theatres on Boston Post Road – this one is near Wilkens Avenue, the other one, Loews Post Road, was near Corsa Avenue.

This large old theatre building is still standing on Boston Road. A couple years ago it was being renovated for retail use. To see several pics from that time, as well as pics of other former theatre buildings in the area, click here:

I’ve walked by this theatre several times in the past month, and can report that it is now being used as a Fine Fare supermarket. Furthermore, the renovations that were done in the last several years to get it ready were a great success – the building simply looks great.

There are a lot of changes happening in this corridor of Boston Road – old buildings getting facelifts and new buildings under construction.

If you go to my “Old Bronx Movie Houses” page for this area (see link in my post from 2004), and go three-quarters of the way down the page, you’ll see pics of some low-lying structures that I tentatively identified as remnants of the Park Theatre. The address was 1471 Wilkins Avenue, literally a stone’s throw behind the Boston Road Theatre. The buildings in my photos, including the smokestack, were torn down sometime in the past year to make way for a handsome new apartment building with rounded facade that gracefully follows the contour of the corner of Boston Road and Wilkins Avenue (Wilkins Ave. is now called Louis Nine Boulevard, by the way). I was sad to see the old buildings go, but the new apartment building is one of the few examples of new construction in the Bronx that works, aesthetically speaking, in my humble opinion.

PLEASE someone provide a WORKING link of an inside and outside pic of how the Boston Road (Corsa Ave) theatre use to look (50s, 60s, 70s). I know how it looks now and would love to buy it! Any further info on this treasure?
[i’m learning so much from this site, THANKS!]

Hey Lost Memory,
I love that pic but it is the Wilkens Ave not Corsa Ave “Boston Road Theatre.” I am positive of that – the Corsa Ave one is one block from Eastchester Road in the NorthEast Bronx.
Do you know where to find more info on the Corsa Ave theatre?
Thank you!

Lost, and InCharge, Loew’s had two theatres on Boston Post Rd. – the one under this heading, the Loew’s Boston Rd. is the one at Wilkens Ave. & Boston Post Rd. (US Rt. 1) The other is under the heading Loew’s Post Rd. was newer and was at Boston Post Rd. and Corsa Ave. in the vicinity of Eastchester Rd.
