Majestic Theatre

Located in the Te Aro district in the south of the city centre. Built on the site of the Empress Theatre, the Majestic Theatre opened on May 13, 1929 with Estelle Brody in “Kitty”, a part-talkie. It was operated by Fuller-Hayward. There were two Doric columns on each side of the proscenium, above which was a large sunburst. It had a cabaret lounge in its basement. It was taken over by Kerridge Theatres in 1945 and they were still the operators in 1960. By 1968 it was again operated by Fullers Theatres.

In 1975 it was given a makeover to the plans of architect W.J. Prouse. It was closed on 19th May 1984 and remained empty for a while until it was demolished to build the Majestic Centre on the site.
