The Embassy Theatre was built in 1882 as a hotel. Around 1917 it was converted into the Popular Picture Palace. By 1959 it was re-named Embassy Theatre and was operated by the Amalgamated Theatre Ltd. chain. It was later operated by Hoyts Theatres. In the early-1990’s it became the Embassy Art House Cinema and closed in 1995.
In 2013 it was converted into the City Impact Church. Occasionally tours of the building are arranged.

From the Hoyts advertising above, it would appear this theatre was still open in 1990.
Also in the early 90’s till 1995. It was an independent cinema Called the “Embassy Arthouse cinema.” I should know I was it’s last projectionist. Before I moved on to becoming the projectionist for Rialto cinemas in Wellington when it first opened. Was an Old School projection box. Between the spool’s system and carbon arc’s
