Whittwood Cinema 10 opened November 21, 1990, at Whittwood Center, now Whittwood Town Center, which had been without a theater since Pacific Theatres Whittwood Theatre closed in January 1987. Historically, both theaters had the same address but the later demolished Whittwood Theatre was located behind Cinema 10 where town houses were built in 2004.
This gave Whittier 13 screens to choose from as the former Wardman Theatre, damaged in the 1987 earthquake, had reopened the previous August 24 by a private party as the Whittier Village Cinemas.
The Whittwood Cinema was George Krikorian’s fifth theater in his growing chain, which began when he opened his first in June 1984, the Peninsula 6 in Rolling Hills Estates, California.
Remember “Home Alone”, one of the opening attractions? It opened in the Los Angeles market on November 16, 1990 in 57 theaters and in 32 days it has taken in over $100 million in the U.S.
As with all Krikorian Premiere Theatres, the Whittwood Cinema 10 was taken over by Regal Theatres in 1996, closed around 2001 and was replaced by 24-Hour Fitness in August 2004.
By 2021 Mr. Krikorian’s theaters operated at locations in Buena Park, Menifee, California and Lexington, Kentucky.
