Midway Drive-In

The Parkview Drive-In was opened as an African-American drive-in on March 22, 1951 with Lisbeth Scott in “Paid in Full”. It opened as the Midway Drive-In on April 11, 1952 with John Payne in “El Paso” & Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in “Sailor Beware”, advertising its self was a ‘white family drive-in’. The 1955 Motion Picture Almanac included the Midway Drive-In, capacity 200 cars, owner Mack Hermon, in Winston-Salem.

The November 20, 1959 issue of Boxoffice described the city’s plans to condemn the Midway Drive-In to use the land for the North-South Expressway. Owners Twin City Home Builders, represented by B. Clyde Shore, said the city’s offer was too low to move the drive-in or build a new one.

A 1955 aerial photo shows a drive-in at the present-day location of the North-South Expressway (US 52) at its intersection with Research Parkway. The closest good address might be a nearby church on Free Street.
