In Cheadle, Staffordshire, in 1912, the Picture Palace was opened when an old, dilapidated building on High Street, near Watt Place, was converted into a “comfortable and commodious Picture Palace”. The Picture Palace was owned by James Bibby.
No doubt spurred on by the newly arrived competition provided by the Kinema (later Empire/Osborne, see separate Cinema Treasures entry) in April 1914 the Picture Palace was advertising that its balcony tip-up seats had been re-upholstered in red plush, and its ventilation system had also been updated.
By 1923 the cinema had been renamed the Palace Cinema, and was offering one show nightly, with two on Saturday and two changes of programme each week.
When the ‘talkies’ arrived, a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system was installed.
The Palace Cinema closed in 1954, and was demolished in 1962.
The site became the car park for the Talbot Inn.
