Waverley Cinema

In the small town of Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, the Waverley Cinema opened on 1st June 1944 with “Lost Angel”, starring Margaret O'Brien and James Craig. It was equipped with Kalee 8 projectors and an RCA sound system, and a screen that measured 14ft by 12ft.

Sadly, the Waverley Cinema closed due to the amount of vandalism it was subjected to. Owner Roland Shacklock told the local newspaper that seats were being slashed and there were disturbances every night. All his profits were being spent on repairing the damage, and this behaviour was also keeping patrons away.

The Waverley Cinema duly closed on 4th April 1965 with “I’ll take Sweden”, starring Bob Hope and Dina Merrill.

The building was used as a plastics factory for about five years. When that closed the building was demolished, in 1971.

According to “Lincolnshire Cinemas”, published in 2005, a library was built on the site. However, the town’s library is situated elsewhere, but there is a Waverley Court, a mixed residential and retail development, on Queen Street. That address begins The Old Mail Office, so perhaps a post office was built on the site.
